Inside was dim and cool. A poster for Jud Süà was displayed on an easel in front of the concession stand; Süssâs demonic face, with a large, hooked nose and yellow eyes, peered out from the darkness. Her stomach churned. âItâs a beautiful theater,â Veronica said. At least thatâs honest.
âWould you like anything?â he asked. âChocolate? Candy?â
Veronica looked at the colorful sweets displayed behind the glass, but felt nauseated. âNoâno, thank you.â
âAh, good,â he said. âI hate popcornâin Austria we only feed corn to the pigs. Itâs unheard of for people to eat.â
They entered the theater. It was grand, with orchestra seating and two balconies; Veronica estimated it could hold at least eight hundred people, and it was nearly full. The theater was crowded with respectable-looking men in suits and women in straw hats with ribbons and flowers, chatting, laughing, and smoking.
âJud Süà is one of Goebbelsâs favorite films,â Will told her as they took their red velvet seats. âWe were able to get this copy a bit early.â He grinned modestly. âI have connections.â
âReally?â
âOh yesâyou must have them to succeed in the import business.â
Veronica realized it felt strange to be in a theater again. Since sheâd moved to Los Angeles and begun working for Ari and Jonah, she hadnât been to a single movie. Sheâd missed Pride and Prejudice with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson, and would have much preferred to see Hitchcockâs Foreign Correspondent, about an American reporter in London who exposes undercover German agents. Canât imagine that would go over well with Will, though, she thought, and swallowed a hysterical giggle.
âAlthough the Jews donât want these movies shown,â he told her. âThey donât like us showing German pictures to Americans. Theyâve been trying to shut us down at the Pacific Electric Theater and the Criterion, too.â
âIsnât that against free speech?â she asked, knowing the Jew he was referring to was Lewis.
âYouâd think!â He gazed approvingly at her. âMy films show Germany in a good light, of course. So, these Jews, they go to my landlords at the various theaters and threaten them with boycotts if they donât kick me out. Now, every time I try to sign a new lease, some damn Jew intervenes.â He looked momentarily embarrassed. âMy apologies for the language.â
âBut youâre able to show films here, at this theater?â
âFor now,â he replied. âAnd Iâll fight to keep showing these films. This is America! We have the First Amendment here!â
âYou work with UFA?â she asked. Jonah had schooled her in Goebbelsâs film company and propaganda.
He looked down at her, impressed. âYes, their Continental Films division.â
âLook who has contacts in high places!â she said, trying to flatter him.
âUFAâs keen to show people in the U.S. the best of Germany.â As Veronica looked up at the ceiling, covered with gilt panels, he continued, âIâm angry how movies in America depict Hitlerâas a clown, a buffoon. Thereâs a film coming out this fall, The Great Dictator, with Charlie Chaplinâa mockery! Disgraceful! Itâs the Jewish influence, of courseâthe new production code Joseph Breen forced throughââ
âI read about it,â she said, frowning.
